If I could lather myself in face masks I would. These ones are just that good.

For as long as I can remember, my skin has been difficult. As a teenager I was plagued with angry – although not unusual for my age – acne, and when I finally, finally reached adulthood and the breakouts ceased, my skin remained scarred and stubborn, oily and miserable.

My skin story is a long one, but just quickly, here are three saviours.

1 – Water. Litres and litres of water.

2 – Walking. I found it helped clear my head (see ya later hormonal breakouts) and also move bloodflow which can aggravate acne.

3 – Facemasks. To this day, this is my favourite, most effective short-term combat against troublesome skin. I literally cannot gush enough about facemasks.

Because I am such an advocate for facemasks (I am so excited writing this post), I have a handful here that will really and truly help your difficult skin and make you feel so much fresher about yourself. As with anything skincare-related, my opinions are clearly based on what my skin reacts to. This is always going to be different for others, so I will attempt to be as impartial as possible.

The Loreal Paris Pure Clay Mask – Exfoliating and Soothing

The Loreal Paris mask is a gritty but gentle mask which exfoliates your skin as you wash it off. Hardens like a clay mask, but rubs off like a cleanser, this is my most-used and loved mask I own. The other variations of this mask  are great too, but I find that my skin feels glowier after this one’s exfoliation.

Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatement

The Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment is so highly regarded on the internet, and so effective. However, if you have sensitive skin, don’t bother. My skin is only mildly sensitive, but even so, if I wear this for more than the recommended 5-10 minutes, my face will grow inflamed. As is, I wear it for a couple minutes three times a week and it really does the job in getting old and deep blackheads.

Chantecaille Jasmine and Lily Healing Mask

Chantecaille is one of my most highly regarded brands when it comes to treating myself. They’re on the expensive side, but every product I’ve ever tried from them is so luxurious. This one is not a typical mask if you have difficult skin, but I find that it is so completely helpful after using tougher masks. This is my second pot of the stuff, because every time I use a strong clay mask and in particular, the above Glamglow, I always follow up with something super gentle and hydrating to make sure that my skin isn’t left raw or dry after treatment. This is a lightweight cream mask, which you can leave in or wipe off (I wipe off after a few minutes) and for those who love to pamper themselves, I highly recommend this to treat your skin.

Radical Skincare Express Delivery Enzyme Peel

While note necessarily a mask, enzyme peels tend to be (in my opinion), the next-best thing. Peeling off all of your old and dirty skin is something – particularly if you’re a makeup wearer – that I find completely vital in a weekly routine. Similar to washing your sheets or doing a full body exfoliate, enzyme peels basically restore your face to the best it can currently be. Expect soft and glowing skin, with minimal appearance of pores.

Origins Clear Improvement Mask

Origins is a brand I always return to for staple skincare. Gentle on the skin, but effective and with just the right level of luxury, every product I try from them feels great on the skin and does the job. Plus I totally think they look great in photos. Definitely Origins’ biggest fan over here. This mask is your generic charcoal clay mask, but is lighter in texture (faster drying and doesn’t irritate) and simple enough to wear daily if you wanted to. Plus the price is great. Win win!

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Oil Control Cleansing Mask

Clinique is another brand that I love for gentle and effective skincare. Their anti-blemish mask is constructed of a lightweight white clay which is actually quite creamy and pleasant on the skin. I find this in all honesty, a little less-effective than the others, but in saying that I’ve almost used up this whole bottle because I just find it so enjoyable to use. Great if your skin is on the combination scale and you’re trying to amp up your skincare a little.

NB – a lot of these masks are on the more expensive side, and this is because I personally have found them to have stronger results. However, if like me at sixteen, you want a more inexpensive option, I have previously used this, this and this, all of which were both enjoyable and effective.

Happy pampering!
